Our Story

The Heart Behind Kimmy’s Safe Haven Rescue

In 2013, Kim Brown began her journey into animal rescue by fostering and volunteering with local shelters. It didn’t take long for her to fall in love with the animals she cared for—so much so that she adopted her first two fosters. What started as a volunteer effort soon became a lifelong mission.

Tragically, in 2015, Kim lost her younger brother, Matthew, to suicide. Matthew suffered from bipolar disorder, and his loss was one of the most devastating moments of Kim’s life. In the depths of her grief, she found healing and purpose through helping animals in need. She realized that she needed them just as much as they needed her.

From this deeply personal place of loss and love, Kimmy’s Safe Haven Rescue was born.

Since its founding, Kimmy’s Safe Haven has been dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected, abandoned, and feral animals—precious souls who, in many cases, have never known the safety of a home or the warmth of a loving family. For Kim, saving these animals became a way to give them the second chance that she so wished she could have given her brother.

Kim and her husband, Shane, have also built their family with love and compassion. In 2006, they adopted their two children. After experiencing two heartbreaking miscarriages, their children brought healing and joy into their lives.

Kimmy’s Safe Haven is more than a rescue—it’s a family, built on love, loss, and a deep commitment to being a voice for the voiceless. Some of our animals stay with us for a short time, while others remain longer due to health challenges or special needs. No matter their story, each animal receives the care, compassion, and dignity they deserve.

These animals may have been forgotten by the world, but they are never forgotten here. Every single one holds a special place in Kimmy’s heart.
